Originally from Indianapolis, Charlene moved to Tucson when she was 16 years old. Charlene taught herself how to draw and paint at a young age. Charlene is partially deaf, and as a young girl, didn’t have the ability to communicate and make friends like others. Charlene started drawing her own paper dolls and their clothes to keep her company. In high school, Charlene enrolled in art classes and began to perfect her skills. Charlene eventually won a scholarship for an art college and turned her love of painting into a life-long passion. Over the years, Charlene has painted works for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She has also done a select amount of commissions by special request.
Charlene's paintings are known for their unique style and vibrant colors. Her work has found homes with collectors all over the United States, and now, through this collaboration, thousands more will have the opportunity to bring her art into their lives.
For Charlene, painting was never meant to be work. Charlene only paints when it brings her joy, and she has gone most of her life without making money off of her paintings. Charlene mostly paints based on nature, scenery, or animals, but has done a few portraits.
“I had a woman where I worked whose daughter died from Down Syndrome,” said Charlene. “She gave me a picture of her daughter as a little girl and I painted that for her. She and her family cried when they got it. To see that type of reaction, I feel that it’s not just painting. I feel like I’ve done something special for that friend, coworker, or family member. It makes me feel good that God gave me this ability and it makes me feel so happy.”
Most of Charlene’s paintings are hanging in the homes of her family members and some have already been passed down to future generations. Charlene’s family treasures her artwork and is proud to be able to keep the originals.
“When I approached my grandma Charlene about selling digital prints of her paintings online, I really wasn’t sure if she would want to do it,” said Jeromee Scot, Charlene’s grandson and owner of Bison Style Company. “I know how special these are for her and for the family. After speaking with Charlene, my mother, and other family members, we agreed together that selling these prints worldwide was a unique opportunity to let others appreciate the paintings we have all enjoyed our whole lives.”
Charlene has never charged what she should for her commissions. People are often shocked at how little she charges for such high-quality works of art. Charlene said that was all on purpose.
“A lot of my friends or coworkers would ask for a painting, but I knew they couldn’t afford what most artists would charge,” said Charlene. “I would only charge people $80 or less for my paintings because I knew they couldn’t afford it and I wanted them to have one.”
Now in her 80s, Charlene lives a quiet life doing what she loves. When asked what she thought about people around the world having the option to buy prints of her paintings, she said she was blown away by the thought.
“I just never thought about myself being good enough that others would want my paintings,” said Charlene. “But more and more I have people telling me it is a God given gift and I say yes and I thank God for that. It’s incredible to me that people will be able to buy these prints and I hope they like them.”
Charlene claims to have completed her final painting. Her family is not so sure. Charlene is not accepting any additional commissions.
